There is an art to eating oysters. The region, the ocean, the particular beach, and the way in which they are harvested all tremendously impact their distinct taste. No two types of oysters are alike. Further, no two suppliers are alike. To help you prepare to enjoy one of our most popular dishes at Herringbone, we have created a guide to Herringbone’s oyster experience. Here is everything you need to know about the oysters that you will find at Herringbone. Next time you attend our daily Oyster Hour, you’ll be ready to dive into the art of oyster eating like a pro.
More than anything, fresh oysters harvested at the right time will make a great oyster. At Herringbone, that is why we work to ensure our different types of oysters are as fresh as possible. Our work with our suppliers is carefully considered so that you can be assured what is on your plate is top quality. The oyster experience at Herringbone stands out from other La Jolla Restaurants. Herringbone’s fresh oysters offer variety and quality. Our daily Oyster Happy Hour has created a unique dining experience for our guests in La Jolla. We are able to celebrate oysters every day for $1 per oyster.*
The Blue Devil, Kusshi, and Kumamoto oysters are some of the most common oysters you will find on our menu. Each kind is distinct in taste. The Blue Devil delivers a burst of salt and is filled with succulent meat. the Kusshi (which, translated from Japanese means “precious”) is incredibly soft and delicate. The Kumamoto, while smaller, delivers a sweet melon taste that creates a unique and distinct flavor. Because our oysters are fresh, they are constantly changing. Ask your server for what is currently on our menu and for their top recommendations.
We recommend a slightly sweet and refreshing drink to pair well with the salty flavor of the oysters. Off of our drinks menu, the Better Mules and Gardens with cucumber vodka and ginger beer offers a cool, refreshing flavor. Our Blackberry Smash with mint and bourbon created a sweet accompaniment to any of our oysters. Of course, a classic Rose or Chardonnay pairs perfectly as well. Further, if you head to Herringbone on Tuesday or Sunday night, all of our bottles of wine are half off.*
Herringbone features a daily Oyster Hour** is available from 4-7 pm for all of our guests, every day. You can view the entire Happy Hour menu here. We encourage you to reserve ahead by booking online here.
